Now accepting submissions
Interested in sharing your climate fiction story? Read these submission guidelines.
At Flourish Fiction, we believe that addressing climate change is both possible and essential. It just takes commitment, hard work, and imagination. That last part is where you come in. We publish narratives imbued with hope and creativity, envisioning a world where humans live in sustainable harmony with planet Earth. We’re enthusiastic about the prospect of new technology, and we also value human connection, justice, and the splendor of nature. We’re looking for fiction that encompasses any combination of those themes, as long as it focuses in some way on climate solutions.
More specifically, we publish the following forms of fiction:
Poetry
Flash fiction (1000 words or less)
Short fiction (1000-5000 words)
Who can submit?
Our submissions are open to anyone, both professional writers and amateurs. We even welcome work from people who have never published fiction before. In fact, we especially welcome work from people who have never published fiction before.
Many of our writers are climate professionals from communities like On Deck Climate Tech, who have so-called “day jobs” developing climate solutions. We see these efforts as complementary, and we encourage all our writers to actively bring about a more sustainable world, at the same time as they’re imagining this world through fiction.
How do I submit?
Send us your work at this link, and we’ll aim to get back to you within one month.
When should I submit?
Whenever your piece is ready! We currently accept submissions year-round.
Who makes editorial decisions?
Potentially you! We have a wide community of writers who contribute to this site in a volunteer capacity. We strongly encourage members of our community to both submit pieces and review them. Click here if you’d like to learn more about becoming a community reader.
After each piece gets a first look from our community readers, we have a core editorial team that decides whether, when, and how to publish it. We’ll provide feedback on all submissions, and we’ll suggest edits and revisions for work that we choose to publish.
What about visual art?
While we don’t publish standalone visual art pieces, we’ll sometimes pair photographs, illustrations, and other artwork with the fiction on the site. If you’d like to submit artwork for consideration, you can do so here.
Do you compensate writers?
At the moment, all involvement in Flourish Fiction is purely voluntary. We don’t make any money from the site, and we’re unable to pay anyone involved (even the core editorial team). We may change this policy in the future, as the site evolves.
What if my work contains profanity or other themes that might be inappropriate?
We want our site to provide hope and inspiration to readers of all ages and sensibilities. However, we don’t want to be too prescriptive on what is and is not appropriate. We’ll evaluate illicit material on a case-by-case basis. We may add a trigger warning to pieces that might be distressing for certain readers.
Ready to submit your work?
Thank you for providing an opportunity to share my story. Unfortunately, the turnaround time on this has extended for too long, so I must withdraw my piece for consideration.
I still haven't hear any progress on my submission; please let us know how we can reach out to you, thanks.
