A sneak peak at our next Flourishes
We've got a new set of poetry, flash fiction, and short stories coming your way soon! Plus, we'll be holding a "flashy" new workshop in March.
Greetings, Flourishers! We know you haven’t heard from us for a while. But that doesn’t mean we’ve slowed down. In fact, it’s just the opposite! We’re writing to share a few updates on what we’ve been up to.
Community event: “Fiction in a Flash” on March 15
Since our launch at the end of last year, the Flourish Fiction community has grown exponentially (welcome, new subscribers)! Next month, we’ll be having our first community event of the year: “Fiction in a Flash” workshop on Tuesday, March 15 at 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET. We’ll explain the process of planning and writing climate flash fiction, and you’ll have your own flash draft by the end of the workshop. You might even have the option to publish it on the site!
The workshop will be held online. Register HERE.
Flourish in the spotlight
Also, Flourish Fiction has been getting great buzz! We were featured in two different publications last month:
One was the Burning Worlds newsletter, which highlights the role of climate change in art and literature. You can read it (and subscribe) here.
The other was the Friday Social column from Canary Media, which explores the intersection of energy, climate and social media. You can read it here.
We respect the heck out of both of them, and we’re so grateful that they chose to shine their spotlight on us!
Our next Flourishes
Over the last few weeks, we’ve gotten a flurry of high-quality submissions, which we’ve throroughly enjoyed reading. We’ve selected a few to publish, and our community readers have been hard at work helping the authors to make revisions.
The Flourishes include all three forms of writing that we publish (poetry, flash fiction, and short fiction), and a wide variety of subject matter. You’ll be able to read all of them over the next month or so. Here’s a preview of what’s in store:
An evocative poem about how ecological crises drive choices across multiple generations, as past and present intertwine for the protection of the future.
Flash fiction about a humble community group advocating for thrifty, homespun solutions, drawing their inspiration from a renowned figure in American history.
A story about the leader of a migrant community on the coast of India trying to plot her next move, in a lyrical piece that the author describes as “postcolonial, queer, and inspired by afrofuturism.”
A story that explores what happens when two climate tech types meet for a date at a climate-themed bar. Is discussing the fate of human civilization too much for a first date? Or is it the new normal?
If you’ve received this email, then these Flourishes will appear directly in your inbox over the next few weeks. Keep an eye out for them! And if you want your friends to get them too, make sure that they subscribe!
And if these Flourishes inspire you to submit your own work , remember that we’re open for submissions on a rolling basis. We have a dedicated team of community readers who provide feedback on every single submission (whether or not we choose to publish it)!
Follow us!
Last but not least, please make sure to follow Flourish on Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook! You might not be super into social media (neither are we, if we’re being completely honest), but these sites are a great way to expand the reach of our community, and every follower counts!
