Upcoming opportunities
Sign up for "Climate Fiction in a Flash" on Tuesday, March 15. Also, our friends at Grist are now accepting submissions for the 2nd annual Imagine 2200 climate fiction competition.
Greetings, Flourishers! Our main goal is to liven up your inbox with short stories, flash fiction, and poetry envisioning a hopeful climate future. However, on a very limited basis, we’ll send you additional events and opportunities that may be of interest in the world of climate fiction. See below for more info a few items that we couldn’t help but share.
Community event: “Fiction in a Flash” on March 15
Anyone can write climate fiction! We’ll show you how. Join us Tuesday, March 15 at 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET for a hands-on workshop writing very short “flash fiction.”
Learn how to take an idea and bring it to life with characters, themes, and a plot. In this approachable, low-pressure workshop, you’ll draft your own original work of climate flash fiction and have fun doing it!
The workshop will be held online. Register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/climate-fiction-in-a-flash-tickets-263888476537
Imagine 2200 is now accepting submissions
Submissions are now open for Imagine 2200: Climate Fiction for Future Ancestors, the annual climate fiction contest from Fix, Grist's solutions lab. The contest calls for short stories of 3,000 to 5,000 words that envision the next 178 years of equitable climate progress. Judges include renowned authors Sheree Renée Thomas (winner of two World Fantasy Awards), Grace L. Dillon (who coined the term Indigenous Futurism), and Arkady Martine (winner of the 2020 Hugo Award for Best Novel). The top three winners will be awarded $3000, $2000, and $1000 respectively, and nine additional finalists will each receive $300.
While Imagine 2200 seeks hopeful stories, there’s no need to be overly optimistic or naive. A just climate future will require hard work and adaptation. Imagine especially welcomes cultural authenticity, rich characters with intersecting identities, and stories that challenge the status quo (which accepts extraction, oppression, and violence). Learn more here!
